Smoke's Hoop Knocker is a unique new instrument brought to you by Iron City Drumworks and Richard "Smoke" Winfield. The Hoop Knocker allows you to bring several new voices to your snare drum, without changing the primary voice. Played in conjunction with the snare head the Hoop Knocker provides a rich, warm cross stick (mounted away from the body) or a rounded, woody rim-shot (mounted towards the body). Or, played by itself, the Hoop Knocker sounds much like a clave. Triple flanged hoops provide a cross stick that sounds, frankly, like two butter knives clanking together. Although Iron City Drumworks is also known for our Hardwood Counterhoops, which also provide improved cross-sticks and rim-shots, some prefer the extra brightness or the piercing rim shots metal hoops provide. The Hoop Knocker is an excellent alternative; giving you the best of both worlds. Unlike some other products, the Hoop Knocker isn't made of plywood. Glue in an instrument like this reduces resonance and clarity of tone. The Hoop Knocker has approximately 96% less glue surface area than a competitor's product. Made from hand-selected domestic and exotic hardwoods, and with the sense of fine craftsmanship Iron City Drumworks is known for, we're confident you won't find a comparable product with the same beauty and quality construction anywhere. To further increase resonance, the Hoop Knocker is isolated from the mounting hardware. Nylon spacers allow the body to "float", while still holding the Hoop Knocker firmly in place. Although most cases will fit your drum with the Hoop Knocker attached, the unit can be removed in less than a minute with a standard drum key. The mounting bolts and spacers remain attached to the body, so there's no fear of losing them. The brackets themselves stay attached to the drum (although they can be removed as well, simply by removing two tension rods).

SMOKE: "I was in the studio last Saturday and Sunday and all the snares I used had either a hoop knocker or a set of Bubinga hoops. The recording engineer was all gaga about the sounds. He pointed out that the hoop knocker sounded consistent even though it was mounted on more than one snare."
